Reflecting on a career that allowed me an almost continuous opportunity to mentor physicians and others on our teams, the one reprint that I shared most often was by leadership experts, Kouzes and Posner. It’s title was Ethical Leaders: An Essay About Being in Love. These two leadership authors spell out clearly, that growing in leadership is a good deal about “loving” your team; that is important whether you are the positional head of the team, or one of the followers. They state so clearly in their essay, leadership is a reciprocal relationship: love ‘em and lead them is bidirectional. Understanding that is how your career advances.
